Dear list members: here I am with our latest brain child: an
exquisit series of study days on money.

This is simply too good to miss - and cheap too, at least by
London standards.
I hope you forgive me for posting it here but it is not a
for-profit venture and it is something that Roger and I have
spent many hours putting together. I hope it will be of
interest to some of you. There is a reduced rate before the
31st of January if you are interested. There are many
interesting speakers from all over the place including
Finland and the U.S.A.. many names should speak for
themselves and I hope you are encouraged to come to
Liverpool to learn about money! If anyone needs overnight
accommodation, we may be able to assist with information.
Anyone interested should contact:

The Mystery of Money:
Money, Value and Self in Therapy

Money has strong associations with greed, power and
corruption. This makes it difficult for helping
professionals to handle money because it seemingly
contradicts the ethos of care. Over recent years the
difficulty with money has intensified because of the decline
of the welfare state. As a result of these tensions which
are built into our professional ethos we find it even harder
to come to terms with a world where increasingly the value
of everything is measured in monetary terms. We live and
work in a system, which fosters both the illusions that we
are of different value but also that " equality " is
achievable and our right. The contribution of the
psychological sciences to an understanding of money is
rather sparse and we tend to avoid it because the money
world disturbs us. The paradox is that money as such is both
a social and psychological phenomenon. Yet we have left it
to politicians and economists to sort it out. In other
words, we need it, we want it but we do not wish to talk
about it.

Yet psychology has a unique contribution to make: Without
the capacity for abstraction, money cannot be. Therefore,
money is by nature a psychological construct and
psychological thinking and exploration are essential to
resolve the dilemmas posed by money. However one of the main
difficulties in understanding money is that it is also a
social construct and no single theoretical framework or
discipline will enable us to achieve a comprehensive
understanding of it.

In keeping with the integrative principles of Merseyside
Psychotherapy Institute, this series of study days on the '
Mystery of Money ' aims at bringing together a wide variety
of perspectives while keeping the focus overall firmly on
the therapeutic task and the therapeutic relationship.
Speakers with a background in analytical psychology,
psychoanalysis, personal construct theory, social
constructivism and systems theory, will blend with
contributions from practitioners whose task it is to deal
managerially and therapeutically with the many aspects of
money: money as a tool, a symbol, an abstraction and as part
of the social mechanisms which continue to generate
inequality, deprivation and their psychological
consequences.

An experiential workshop, exploring the personal use of
money, for those working in or managing in the Helping

difficult. This workshop aims at providing an opportunity to
begin exploring and thinking about our personal patterns of
using money and its implications for our lives and
relationships.
Participants will be asked as part of the workshop to bring
some of their own money. This needs to be made up of two
five-pound notes and five pound coins. This money will be
used for experiential exercises and may not be available any
more to the participant at the end of the day.

Places are limited and allocated on a first come, first
served basis to eligible applicants, Eligibility is
determined by your work and by completing an application
form obtainable from the MPI Administrator.
