Joining the Association for Specialists in Group Work ASGW
What is ASGW?
The Association for Specialists in Group Work, founded in 1973, is a division of the American Counseling Association. As counselors who are interested in and specialize in group work, we value the creation of community; service to our members, their clients, and the professions; and leadership as a process to facilitate the growth and development of individuals and groups.
The purposes of the Association shall be to establish standards for professional and ethical practice; to support research and the dissemination of knowledge; and to provide professional leadership in the field of group work. In addition, the Association shall seek to extend counseling through the use of group process; to provide a forum for examining innovative and developing concepts in group work; to foster diversity and dignity in our groups; and to be models of effective group practice.
As a member of ASGW, you receive:
- Together, the ASGW Newsletter, three times per year providing regional and national group news and information, legislative updates, and special articles of interest to group practitioners.
- Journal for Specialists in Group Work, a quarterly journal that publishes research, practical and innovative articles of relevance to group practitioners.
- Information on, and reduced registration rates for, ASGW group training events conducted in regional areas across the country. An ASGW workshop coordinator works with local sponsors to offer a variety of group training workshops that provide attractive opportunities for continued professional development.
- Local support through state and regional organizations for specialists in group work.
