Thank you for your very detailed message discussing identities, and thank
you for sharing your personal situation (I just opened my e-mail today
after a long pause). It was fascinating reading, and very useful to my
research too. My gut feeling is that other situations might be similar to
yours. Mine certainly is. As an italian (or Roman, when I am in Italy),
living in England, and with a sicilian mother, and a half slavic father,
I think my identity is a 'mess'! So many of my
reactions/feelings/beliefs/posture/linguistic register depend on context,
that sometime I wonder if I belong anywhere. One funny thing, is that I
felt much more 'european' and a citizen of the world before living
abroad.... Now after three yrs. of living in England, I feel much more
italian! A reaction to a culture that is not only different, but that
makes 'foreigners' feel foreigners and 'strangers' for a very long time?
I dunno... Maybe english people feel the same way when they come to live
in Italy... (is that why we had so many romantic english poets living
amongst us last century, did that experience give them a stronger feeling
of 'self'?) And on this note I leave the discussion open. BTW... Any
Kellyan views on this?
