dear Ellen,
nice question. Rue give you already an answer that can bring you further.
I schould also suggest to have a look at the way new elements are
integrated in the range of convenience of relevant constructs. It is
difficult to provide you with an explanation at length; instead I should
suggest to take David Winter`s book "Personal construct theory in
clinical practice"; Routledge, London 1992. He presented very nicely
how an "inconvenient" construing may produce psychopathological
functioning; the usual way a construing process takes place can be well
deduced by understanding the disfunctional one.
Perhaps Al Landfield can help you with a sound discussion about it. He
retired (Lincoln Nebraska) but he will be happy to answer you I guess.
Good luck. Ana
