Yes, there were 5 raters who were give the same (about 70) rep grids
and completed a personality questionnaire for each 'target', to
describe their view of the person who had completed the rep grid.

Until now we focused on the correlation between ratings (averaged
across the five raters and for each rater individually) and
self-reports.

Sorry for the jargon. It simply means in this context, that the raters
have no other information about the ratee except the rep grid (no
picture, no hand writing and especially no acquaintance with the
target, because all rep grids were presented in a standardized format
that did not allow to identify the person who completed the grid).

I agree. However, in the context of the present study, which I would
characterize as nomothetic, we do not intend to apply the lens model
idiographically. Our basic question was whether valid personality
impressions can be formed on the basis of a rep grid alone. Given the
global criterion we used, I interpret moderate (significant)
correlations as an indicator of the validity of the rep grid / rater
combination. In the next step we should test for incremental validity
(e.g., does the validity increase in comparison to just having a photo
of the ratee or observing a samll behavioral episode etc.).

Kind regards
Rainer
