Seasonal greetings and administration

Dear all!

This is a message to everyone on all the lists I administer
from the psyctc.sghms.ac.uk address.

First of all: Happy Christmas to all who celebrate it and very best
wishes to all for whom 1998 is about to be a new year! (Anyone out
there running on a different calender?)

Now the problems: My list server currently sends an average of
about 1,500 messages a day, mostly to the AFT and Sign-Speak lists but
a small amount of traffic. The server has been down for about four
days in the last three months: two owing to a disaster at the computer
unit central access router; two in the last three weeks owing to my
server machine behaving very oddly.

If you sent a message to the list or the list control
(lists@psyctc.sghms.ac.uk) over the last two days and nothing
happened then please try again now. If you know someone else who has
had trouble subscribing: please encourage them to try again.

The computer unit is now desperately understaffed and in managerial
crisis and they have warned that their network support is likely to
collapse intermittently until there are new people in post which is
unlikely to be before mid-February.

My own server is clearly either being attacked or is unwell for some
other reason but I can't work out what's going wrong. I suspect that
the answer is that it needs to be rebuilt and hidden from possible
malicious attack behind a firewall. That means money, which I don't
have, and time, which I can find I guess! So:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

ANYONE out there love their list so much they have money to offer or
suggestions as to someone else who might provide that stuff?!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

If the service collapses while I'm away (some of the next three
weeks, not sure how much yet) there will be little I can do to get it
back up: I am sorry but please bear with me.

Best wishes!

Chris
