Day 18. Friday 26.viii.16. Biganos to Biscarrosse-Plage

Ouch, that map brings this day back to me. I don't remember whether it was Gurgle maps's fault, or mine, or a combined effort, that caused that long detour which ended here.

That's the beach at the Étang (lake) de Cazaut-Sanguinet where I realised it was genuinely impossible, at least on proto-Toto, to go further south. Bad moment.

I have few images from the day but the header image is from the day and you are probably getting used to the two litre supply of orange juice by now. What isn't visible there is this.

Proto-Toto now sported, as all true camino pilgrims should, a pilgrim's shell. We had acquired it, to be strictly accurate, Jo-anne had asked for it on my behalf, in a lovely restaurant, I think called the pig who laughs (or was it talks?) somewhere in the Dordogne in my "divertissement" week off from the cycling. Coquilles Saint Jacques were on the menu and Jo-anne asked what they did with the shells and explained what I was doing and we were presented with that. I've still got in somewhere!

This is a terrible image trying to convey something of the size of the dune through the trees there. That's the Dune du Pilat. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_of_Pilat which confirms that it's the highest sand dune in Europe and that it has been moving inland historically. It was curiously awe inspiring and I was cycling alongside it for nearly 3 km.
