Updated 19.x.19 as gallery I was using hadn’t worked for months! Tweaked 24.x.19 to remove slider as I’m going to stick with just galleries for ‘photos.]
These are ‘photos from my first rest day of the ride at my beloved Chartres. It’s famous for the cathedral but there is also two monastic (?) churches which are worth a visit but go almost unvisited. This gallery has them in sequence but maybe I should split them and explain a bit more about what’s what. I currently playing with putting ‘photos up in gallery and in “slider” format. In both formats you should get the full size image if you click on any of the images. First this gallery, which starts with the first 12 images, then the slider below,
And encouragement to pilgrims
I looked down at my feet having chosen my spot to snap the doors and saw this. Seemed auspicious!
The west front
The famous west front doors. I love these early gothic, elongated figures. Up there with the stained glass as epitomising the cathedral.
The central west typanum
Christ in majesty.
Simple but beautiful.
This time (my third? fourth?) visit, I had no guidebook and just soaked up the impact.
Detail of supporting figures, left door.
One thing I like so much about Chartres cathedral is that it wasn't constrained by a need for consistency. These are the only set of columns of the six sets who have these supporting figures.
As ever, humans must batter others and others’ things
The full statues seem to have escaped beheading but not the little ones.
