Hm, another day I don't remember well at all but reading my blog post about my IT challenges, and seeing responses from Haroula and Jayne both took me back but in some ways seemed to be absolutely how I am in 2026 as I was in 2016: in a constantly rather masochistic dependence relationship with IT! The particular challenges have changed and in 2026 I mostly get good 3G or 4G internet connections from my 'phones (yes, plural: one for the UK, one for France) and I don't remember having more than one appliance refused on a wifi connection lately. However, the general experience that IT things too often don't do what they are supposed to do is something I hit somewhere between daily (one yesterday, none yet today) and weekly. I continue to lose at least an hour, often several, every week.
Yes, a bit of that may be that I try to use open source software whenever I possibly can (and that's currently 100% of my software I think but sadly some M$oft and Adobe are about to get back in) and for sure it's because I use a lot of different IT, particularly different software, for all I do and that covers the operating system (currently Kubuntu 26.04 and Android on the 'phones) an various things for number crunching, much Emailing and all this web publishing.
I liked Jayne's response, which I had forgotten despite our overlapping by Email recently. Yes, the way so many chains and services bought up and run purely for shareholder profit treat their employees is pretty horrid. It's not just software that has undergone enshittification, sadly much of what I see and hear about the UK NHS says it, like the politicians who have driven it that way, is also enshittified. Aargh.
To be fair to the garmin that I was using back then, I think this was the only day that it and other things succumbed to heat stroke which is odd because many later days, particularly in Spain, were definitely hotter.
That header image? I was seeing more of those massive crop watering systems as I moved south. I remember that they somehow made me think of dinosaurs.
