The “third sector”

Term much used in the UK (and elsewhere?) to denote charities and charity funded work. It is a third sector distinct on the one hand from the public sector and on the other from private sector.

Details #

In the UK the term persists but has perhaps become less accurate and perhaps less helpful as Community Interest Companies( similar to Public Interest Corporations in the USA) developed which fall between charities and private enterprise. It is also rendered less clear by diversification of operational models in both the public and private sectors. In the public sector far more work, including psychological therapy work, is “outsourced” or “bought in” from the private sector, particularly in the UK NHS. In the private sector, where private sector therapies used, in the 20th Century to mean single handed therapists or very small practices, increasingly companies have formed, ranging considerably in size but bigger than the biggest traditional practices, to deliver therapy services.

Mentioned in Chapter 1 but not again, much of what is in Chapter 8 about service level change measurement would apply for typical third sector therapy provision.
